THE PRE-WAR SUMMER SEMINAR IN ENGLAND

At the seminar Sir Stafford Cripps made the classical remark on Professor's use of English (in view that a good sixty percent of English words derive from Latin, Professor simply decided to use only those words which came from Latin, a language he knew very well, inlike English): "Professor seems to know all those words in the English language which an Englishman does not know - but I doubt if he could go to a market and succesfully buy what he needs!"

Another person who attended the seminar, was Mr. Charles W.Daniel, founder and owner of the Daniel Co., well-known publisher of books on philosophy, art and health. He had been a disciple of Tolstoy, and what he learned from Tolstoy had illumined his whole life, and when he discovered the Essene Gospel of Peace it was a shining affirmation of his lifelong dedication to pacifism. He was not the usual sort of publisher who looks on his work as a commercial enterprise. Peace in all things, and simplicity of living - these were the values he learned from Tolstoy which in his later years he found affirmed so eloquently in the Essene Gospel of Peace. It was the beginning of a long relationship with Professor, through which he published a good number of his books.

Inevitably, the summer drew to a close, and as the year was 1937, it was not only the end of the seminar, but the end of a whole way of life for England. In retrospect, the coming holocaust gave an unutterable pregnancy and beuaty to that summer at Surrey. A great deal of material was produced during the seminar, material that had to be edited into book form. But for this purpose, Professor needed undisturbed quiet in a warm climate - and the rains had already started in England. So Purcell and Professor got out the maps and after some discussion decided that the island of Jamaica would fit the purpose exactly. Professor became the owner of a pre-fabricated house that couild be put together in two or three hours, had it packed into boxes and embarked for Jamaica.
